Lighting plays an important role in the growth of marijuana plant during its vegetative state. For a single plant, the lighting costs are low. In the case of a window located adjacent to the plant, a fluorescent light can prove to be the best lighting option when the sun sets. Other options that provide minimal light on and off the day include a T5, a T8 or a CFL. In the case of the absence of a window, maximum light is required for the growth of marijuana. A 250-watt light bulb, HPS bulb and MH bulb provide bright and maximum lighting to support the plant’s growth.
Temperature and humidity are among the most important factors that influence the growth of marijuana. The temperature during the day should be around 68 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit and during the night it should drop down by 15 degrees. A relatively dry environment has to be maintained around the plant. Dry atmospheres allow easy and quick respiration by removing the moisture from marijuana leaves. This offers a better environment to support the plant’s growth. But if the temperature is too warm along with a completely dry environment it deprives the plant of its healthy growth. Strike a right balance between temperature and humidity to optimize growth.
The quality of water and process of watering are the other prime aspects that support the growth of marijuana. Chlorinated water is not suited for marijuana plants. The water has to be treated with anti-chlorine drops before use. Water used should be brought down to room temperature as ice-cold water brings lethal shocks to the plant. The quantity of water used also plays a crucial role. For plants growing in three gallons of soil, three quarts of water are required. The moisture has to be evenly maintained in the soil. Overwatering is a serious concern when plants are constantly watered without a proper need.

Once all the prerequisites are met and the seeds are purchased, it’s time to begin the germination. Simple and effective germination steps contribute to the maximum growth potential of the marijuana plant. Transfer the seed and cover it completely with a quarter inch to half inch soil. The soil should be moist. It has to be maintained at 75-degree temperature. After 3 to 7 days’ tiny sprout arises. After germination of many seeds in the same format, it has to be planted into the soil. Soil should remain moist but never completely wet. Once they are planted they require maximum light to promote growth.
Following germination, the vegetative stage begins when branches and leaves are formed and the plant continues to grow in height. The stem becomes extremely thick. The vegetative phase for a single plant lasts for 30 days. Leaves by the process of photosynthesis absorb energy from the sunlight and contributes to flowering stage of the plant. During the flowering stage of the plant, it requires 12 hours of uninterrupted sunlight or lamp light and 12 hours of complete darkness to attain maximum growth. The flowering stage takes place for about 8 to 10 weeks until the plant is ready for the harvest.
Harvesting is carried out by eliminating the buds and the leaves curling around the marijuana plant. Curing is the next vital step that follows immediately after harvest. The plant has to be dried by allowing it to be hung upside down in a cool, dry room for days together. Once the plant is dried it has to be stored in sterile glass jars with tightly closed lids. The air that is present in the jar initiates the curing process. Mold growth occurs during curing which can be prevented by keeping the jars dry. Distinct aroma and texture developed in marijuana indicate the completion of curing.

Choosing the right containers assure optimum growth of the marijuana plant. A fabric breathable pot with six inches across in dimension would be an ideal choice. Pots made out of plastic and clay are the other options available. Make sure pots have enough drainage holes to let out excess water. Bigger the pot size, greater the growth of the plant. Transplanting is a delicate process which involves utmost care and enough planning. Transfer the germinated seed from one container to another large container that is pre-prepared with soil, by tapping it upside down until both the plant and the soil pops out.
An organic potting soil is always an ideal medium to support the growth of the marijuana. Other growing mediums that work well with marijuana are peat, coco or sphagnum. The chosen medium should allow enough oxygen to reach the roots of the plant. It should also contain humus. Organic soils have some amount of added nutrients in it. Such soils provide ample nutrients to the plant until it reaches the flowering stage. The soil has to be sterilized before use to eradicate parasites. An ideal soil medium should contain a balanced pH level. Highly acidic medium fails to thrive the marijuana plants.
Using too many fertilizers and nutrients results in burning of the plants. Nutrient burn in the plant is said to have negative health effects, so it is ideal to avoid them by using required amount of nutrients. Nutrients should be fed minimally to the plant only after three weeks. In the initial stages, dilution of the fertilizer before use prevents nutrient burn in the plants. The soil turns acidic on the addition of fertilizer which can affect the growth of the plant. Continue to monitor the pH level of the soil. Organic worm castings are healthier options for the growth of marijuana plants.
